Is it just me feeling we are divided more and more? Black and white, red or blue, he said/she said, us and them… People are vocal about which side they are taking – on social media, or on their yard with a sign… It used to be taboo to talk about religion or politics with family, friends or neighbors, but these conversations and expressions are becoming more commonly seen in our daily lives.
When it comes to medicine, it is easily argued between “western” or “eastern”, “allopathic” or “holistic”, “natural” or “synthetic”. Of course, when it comes to this argument, I am clear which side I am taking, and I can argue pretty strongly. I am passionate about alternative healing, and practicing medicine in an “eastern”, “holistic” “natural” way, and my patients know all about that.
However, with this argument, I feel I failed to serve a patient, and I strongly regret it. This was a humbling moment for me. I had a new patient who was suffering from pain and severe allergies. As many of other patients who have similar problems, she was on regular repeated allergy shots. According to her, these shots saved her life, and she said she would continue getting the shots.
To me, it was obvious that the shots were contributing to her current health problems. I knew, for a fact, there were some chemicals, synthetic diluents, antimicrobial agents and preservatives in those serums. Besides having those ingredients, the serum consisted of things that she was allergic to! That is the premise of allergy shots; using a small amount of allergen to stimulate the immune system without causing a severe allergic reaction, and they claim these shots gradually desensitize the immune system and allow it to build up a tolerance to the allergens, and eventually minimize or eliminate the allergic symptoms.
However, what I am leery about regarding allergy shots is that allergens are coming into the body, without passing through the “immune system”. We are exposed to things such as environment, food, virus, bacteria, etc., and our immune system protects us from those things that are harmful to us. These things come through our skin, nose, mouth, gut lining, etc. We touch, breath and eat things, and our immune system figures out if those things are safe to us or not, and even mediates harmful things so that we don’t react too much. Anything injected will bypass a big part of the immune system. That is where I think allergy shots can be very stressful for our system.
I haven’t seen any studies done with allergy shot treatments that have caused any new symptoms other than their original “allergy” symptoms, but in my small clinic, most people who have got allergy shots or allergy drops over 6 months, have some joint or muscle pain, or digestive issues to name a few. I can’t prove there is any relation between them, it is just a fact.
I told the patient that the allergy shots may have created other problems for her. I explained allergy treatments I offer don’t use needles, serum or any drugs, and are non-invasive and safe. The premise of the treatments is to balance energy difference between her and the allergen so that it wouldn’t bother her anymore!
However, for this patient, allergy shots were working, and they SAVED HER LIFE! What part of “HER LIFE WAS SAVED”, didn’t I understand? It was not necessary for me to be negative about the treatments she was getting. Here I was trying to help her with a most holistic way, but if she was happy with her current treatments, it was not necessary to badmouth what she was gladly doing. My goal is not to convert people from “Western Medicine” religion to “Eastern Medicine” religion. My objective is to make my patients happy and healthy. So, after all, she was confused, scared and ultimately stopped coming. I feel I failed to serve because I shoved “alternative”, “holistic” treatment concept while she wasn’t ready to understand. I called her several times as I care about her, but she hasn’t called back so far.
A lot of what I do is very different from conventional medicine and difficult to comprehend, and I understand people think it’s weird. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. If I keep doing something that doesn’t work, I don’t have a business. I have been practicing in a “holistic”, “alternative” way. However, it is not “my way or the highway”. Although I will tell my point of view, I can still work with anyone who wants to keep taking allergy shots or drops. People take allergy pills, shots or drops because they have unwanted symptoms. If the symptoms are gone, allergy shots or drops are not needed. My goal is the same; I want people to have an allergy symptom free life! That is our mutual goal.
As mentioned before, our lives and beliefs can be divided in many ways. I don’t necessarily think it is a bad thing. I think it is bad if all of us are the same. Divisions should create balance. We need Yin to balance Yang and vice versa. In Chinese medicine, Yin and Yang’s separation causes “death”. With Yin and Yang balancing, we are whole and that is the big picture we are going after. In medicine, I believe it’s our health and happiness.
